Welcome to Apple IIGS Emulation for BeOS
Sweet16 is the premier Apple IIGS emulator for computers
running the Be operating
system (BeOS). Based on the popular Bernie ][ The Rescue Apple IIGS
emulator for Mac OS, Sweet16 is highly compatible, running virtually all
Apple ][+, //e, or IIGS software. Sweet16 is available
for both PowerPC and Intel versions of BeOS.
Consider: an accelerated Apple IIGS (anywhere from
6 MHz to 60 MHz, depending on your PC or Mac's speed!) with 8 MB of memory,
up to 12 disks mounted at once, hundreds of megabytes of disk space, and
a ZipGS accelerator card all for only US $15. That's a bargain you won't
find on eBay, especially with ZipGS card going for $200 or more these days.
Sweet16's Key Features
- A highly-optimized assembly language emulation core (PowerPC version
only).
- Support for disk images in a wide variety of formats.
- Support for mounting many physical disk devices, such as high-density
floppies (you can't, however, mount an 800k Apple II 3.5" or 143k
Apple II 5.25" disk due to hardware limitations). You can even plug
in the SCSI hard disks from a real IIGS (assuming
your computer has a SCSI interface, of course) and use them.
- Easily import files from HFS or FAT (MS-DOS) disks by simply mounting
them on the emulated IIGS.
- Emulation of the IWM hardware; 800k and 5.25" floppy images are
mounted as IWM devices (up to two of each size).
- Sound support (both Ensoniq and classic 1-bit sound).
- Emulation of ZipGS hardware, and support for speed control.
- Joystick support.
- Serial port support, plus exciting Serial-via-Network support, which
lets you emulate serial port connections via a TCP/IP socket.
- High-performance video updates.
- Record movies of your Apple IIGS video.
- Multithreaded; Sweet16 uses BeOS multitasking capabilities to improve
performance. Sweet16 scales nicely on multiprocessor systems.
Things You'll Need
To use Sweet16, you'll need the following:
- A copy of Sweet16 (either the PowerPC or Intel version).
- An Apple IIGS ROM image file.*
- Disk images, including a bootable disk image.
- BeOS Release 4.5.2 or later. Sweet16 won't run under R4 or earlier
versions of the BeOS.
Details on how to create a ROM image and where to find disk images to
get started can be found in the Installing Sweet16
chapter.
* Important note: The Apple IIGS
ROM is copyrighted by Apple Computer, Inc. and cannot be distributed legally
by myself or anyone else other than Apple Computer. You must create the
APPLE2GS.ROM ROM image file yourself, from a real Apple IIGS
computer; there are instructions for doing this in the Installing
Sweet16 chapter. To use Sweet16 legally, you must actually own the same
model Apple IIGS the ROM image was extracted from.
Do not ask me to send you a ROM image. I'll throw your
mail away and try hard to forget you asked.
