Introduction ------------ The NES Information FAQ was created to answer all the many questions about NES emulation today. People have trouble finding information now that so many great sites have left the emulation world [in the long run]. This will be updated sporadically with the ever progressing NES emulation 'scene'. All comments are welcome, and additions to the FAQ are also very welcome. Also bear in mind that this is beta version 1, so there's a lot more to do here. You can get the latest version from the news-u-lator. http://www.lator.com Release 3 Notes --------------- NES4PC is clearly the fastest growing emulator around right now, and it's for windows. Akilla is really putting a lot of effort into the emulator, and I'd recommend you beta test his emu and send in reports of bugs and such. This emu can replace the soon coming iNES... RockNES has made wonderful advancements since the last release of this document, including sound and much better support. This emu was started off of the xNes source, an emulator that showed great promise but lamers stopped the project. DarcNES is another emulator that popped up. It is just in source code form, but it is around as advanced as RockNES (RockNES uses the DarcNES sound code). There is almost no trainers should be deleted. (There are exceptions to this, like Deadly Tower) Trained one means hacked, hacked version only works with a trainer. Without it, the hacked code in rom will call a procedure which does not exist, and nonexpecting results happen. 1.3.2 How do I avoid bad trainers? It would be a good idea to use the Vertigo Packs. They are the highest quality ROM packs around, and all of them are garunteed to work good. 1.4 ROM Sources 1.4.1 Vertigo Packs (see reference 5.1 for a list of games in these packs) http://www.texark.org/grayarea/ <- For NES http://204.186.18.53/SitC/default.htm <- All packs 1.4.2 Other ROM Sources http://welcome.to/buddharom <- has pirate roms http://24.93.29.123/ <- Dumps new roms http://members.xoom.com/RomOut/main.html http://www.fortunecity.com/rivendell/lunar/177/intro.htm 2. fwNES related 2.1 FDS Problems? If you are playing FDS, don't use the GUI to load them, some disks tends to screw up the emulator, making F5, F6 unusable and forcing you to boot side B, use the command line! The best way is to use a frontend... [note: version .302 was just released that may fix this for you] 2.2 Command Line Switches Here's what FanWen says about them: (I corrected his grammar) "Most games dodn't need any switches ... only some weird games need it ... I play it usually using default setting ... expect -vgamode 4 -sound 1 -frameskip 0 ! " 3. FAMICOM.EXE related 3.1 Converting Formats 3.1.1 pasofami to disk system format (famicom) hCON ver 0.1.16 by hal9999 http://home.onestop.net/hal9999/hCON.zip FAMCNV Ver 0.11 by Shiho http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/1886/famcnv.lzh 3.1.2 Converting .DK to .FAM For a .DK to .FAM converter, go to this site: http://members.tripod.com/~mpeg4all/hcon.zip 3.1.3 Converting .FDS to .FAM 1) Copy the file to another 8 char filename ending with "??????_a.fds" 2) and again for subsequent sides 3) Strip off the FDS^Z Header (First 16 bytes) 4) If more than 1 side, Search for the next instance of "*NINTENDO-HVC*". That's where the next side begins. Seperate each side into "??????_a.fds", "??????_b.fds" ect... 5) Run famicom and load a FAM disk file or Disk Bios. 6) Under Edit menu, select Disk System, Load 7) Load the file. 4. Game Specific Problems 4.1 How can I run 'Crisis force' on NESticle? You need a patch if you are running it on NESticle. You can get it here: http://www.lucky.co.jp/~washu 4.2 How can I run Hyper Olympics? Hyper Olympics requires a special device to play game that support only BioNES. NESticle, fwNES and any emulator doesn't support hypershot controller. 4.3 My Insector-X rom doesn't work, what's wrong? That rom is commonly in the wrong mapper. Make sure its set to mapper#33 4.4 My Metal Slader Glory rom doesn't work, what's wrong? That rom has 2 versions out. One of them is completely corrupt and one isn't. It's just a matter of luck wether or not you get the good one =) (http://altern.org/matt2/) 4.5 Where can I get Mortal Kombat or Tekken2 for the NES? These roms do exist, but I don't know where. If you know, please let us know as well. 4.6 How do I play Castlevania 3 correctly? If you're still having problems with this and fwNES, try this command switch: fwnes -mmc5fix cv3.nes 4.7 Where can I get Ghost Busters 2 for the NES? http://huizen.dds.nl/~faith/gb2.htm 4.8 SMB2J problems Apparently, SMB2J doesn't use mapper6, it is just a bad rom. It is a FDS image. 4.9 Street Fighter 2 is having problems Try using BioNES. It seems that other emulators have problems with it. 4.10 How About Donkey Kong Country 2? DKC2 is somewhere in circulation, and it works very well on BioNES. It works fairly well on fwNES and LoopyNES as well. 5. Interesting Things 5.1 Crystalis For a mere $300,000.00 we can obtain the rights to Crystalis. That would allow whoever purchased 'em to make a sequel or movie or novelization or anything else of the sort. Apparently $300,000.00 is their minimum liscensing fee but he said they'd consider throwing in 2 or 3 other games of similar age & genre.. aka other old NES games with that fee. Anybody got an extra $300,000.00 laying around? ; ) [courtesy of InVerse] 5.2 FAN 98 Emulators These strange, but cool, emulators have been recently found. And they have the potential to work, its just that they're in japaneese. If there's anyone who can translate, please do =) 6.
